The Carolina Hurricanes have some work to do whether it’s during this season or in the offseason to ink defenseman Dougie Hamilton (UFA) and forward Andrei Svechnikov (RFA). Both players play major roles on and off the ice for the squad that if they are lost, it would be detrimental to the team and their success. They are both respectively at the top of list’s when it comes to the best at their position and there is quite frankly no big argument to make.
The Dougie Hamilton Contract
Hamilton’s Carolina Career:
21:14 AV TOI
For a defenseman, these are pretty impressive numbers for Dougie Hamilton to put up thus far in his Carolina Hurricanes career. He’s often knocked down off the ice for his “locker room issues” but he seems to be fitting in just nicely with the Canes after getting traded twice for those apparent issues. With instant chemistry made between him and his D-partner Jaccob Slavin, who compliments Hamilton’s game almost perfectly, would be a huge loss for the team if Hamilton isn’t re-signed.
So what does his next contract look like? Hamilton is currently getting paid $5,750,000 million dollars which was signed in 2015 by the Flames. This proved to be a gamble that worked out very very well. With comparables around the NHL for the next contract, it’s safe to say Hamilton will get a significant upgrade in money and term if the Hurricanes are willing to do so.
Hamilton Contract Prediction: 8 Million (AAV) for 6 Years
The Andrei Svechnikov Contract
Svechnikov’s Carolina Career:
15:51 AV TOI
The former third overall pick from the 2017 NHL Draft has formed into a stellar player for the Hurricanes in his time there. He may be the most important member of the team because he provides so many great qualities that are directly related to winning. His creativity is almost one of a kind. His calmness with the puck on his stick to find open teammates or get himself into a great spot is special. This is all at the age of 20 so just imagine the growth and player he’s going to mold into in five years.
Now what does number 37’s next contract look like? Coming off his entry level deal at a very young age, it is common for players to get paid. Many younger players in similar situations have done it before him across the NHL. It might be the same for Svechnikov here in Carolina unless he takes a little pay cut.
Svechnikov Contract Prediction ST: 7 Million (AAV) for 3 Years
Svechnikov Contract Prediction LT: 8.9 Million (AAV) for 8 Years
