Tottenham Hotspur vs. Everton Pre-Match Analysis

Amazon’s “All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur” has reminded supporters just how painful the 2019/20 campaign played out. After reaching the pinnacle of a Champions League Final, the fall from glory was swift and hard. After crushing defeats, a sacked manager, a legend arriving, a laundry list of injuries, and impacts on and off the field due to Covid-19, the season saw Spurs finish sixth in the League table with a berth in the Europa League.

Tottenham supporters will be thankful that the 2020/21 campaign kicks off for Spurs at home against Everton Sunday Sept. 13 at 11:30 a.m. EST.

Match Preview

This weekend’s match should shape up to be an interesting clash between the two clubs after a couple of new signings arrived for each side. Tottenham brought in three new players to the squad in Doherty (RB), Højbjerg (CM), and on free, Hart (GK). Everton was able to secure the signings of Rodriguez (CAM), Allan (CM), and Doucouré (CM).

With a shortened preseason due to Covid-19 and postponement of the league in March, it is unclear what shape the teams will be in heading into this contest, given the condensed preseason schedule.

Of Tottenham’s four friendlies, they won their first three – beating Ipswich Town, Reading and Birmingham – before losing the final match 2-1 to Championship club Watford with most of the first team squad being away on international duty.

As for Everton, they have only had a couple of games to prepare for the new campaign. The club drew with Blackpool, and then went on later to beat Preston North End.

It is likely to expect that both squads will be experiencing some rust as they try to find their season form. Given their new signings, both clubs will also experiment tactically to see how each new face fits into the squad. Lack of fans seems to have taken away the edge of playing at home, and we could witness some lackluster performances as it continues to prove a mental impact on playing in empty stadiums.

Although a draw is expected in N17, that doesn’t mean there won’t be goals and there is a strong chance both teams will get on the scoresheet, especially with the attacking options on each side.

Spurs scored 61 league goals in the 2019-20 campaign, the sixth-highest tally in the league, and have managed to hit the back of the net in their previous eight home league matches.

Everton also have plentiful attacking options, with Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin sharing 26 Premier League goals last season, and the dynamic duo will be looking to get off to a strong start this season.

Predicted Lineup and Outcome

Wanting to get off to a strong start at the beginning of this new campaign, Tottenham will likely look towards an attack minded formation.

With Giovani Lo Celso, Harry Winks, and Japhet Tanganga all seeming to be unfit to start because of injury or illness, we can assume that Ndombele will fill the CM role alongside Dele, with Højbjerg holding.

Coming off a successful week of international play, we can expect to see a new face in Doherty at the back with Davies, Alderweireld, and Dier completing the back line.

With one of our own (Kane) getting back into form with the England squad, we will indefinitely see him stacked at the top with Son and Bergwijn. My prediction on the day is Spurs taking 3 points over Everton with a 2-1 victory.

Tottenham predicted XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Doherty, Alderweireld, Dier, Davies; Højberg, Dele, Ndombele; Bergwijn, Kane, Son.

The Wrap Up:

All new campaigns bring a tinge of excitement and hope. In Tottenham’s case, there may be some pressure to deliver silverware to a starving fanbase.

Can José bring a desperate squad to the top? Can Kane get his trophy? Can Tottenham finally quiet the naysayers? Stay tuned to find out, and check back in with me in the near future for more Tottenham News and COME ON YOU SPURS!
