With the 2020 MLB right around the corner, join the BRKDWN in a mini series leading into the start of the 2020 MLB season ranking the top 5 players per position heading into 2020
5. Rafael Devers – Boston Red Sox
2019 Season Statistics: 156 games: .311/.361/.555 32 HR 115 RBI
With the loss of Mookie Betts to the Dodgers in the offseason, the 23 year-old Devers will look to be the focal point of the offence after a breakout 2019 season. Devers had career highs in almost every category and proved that he could be the everyday third baseman of the Red Sox. It will be interesting to see how the Red Sox do this season, just over 17 months removed from a World Series championship.
4. Jose Ramirez – Cleveland Indians
2019 Season Statistics: 129 games .255/.327/.479 23 HR 83 RBI
After a very slow start to the season, Jose Rameriz had an overall down year in 2019. While he started to pick it up halfway through the season, it was not enough to stave off the Minnesoda Twins and the Indians missed the playoffs. The Indians are in limbo as they traded away Corey Kluber in the offseason and the future of Fransico Lindor is in the air. Regardless, Rameriz is a bounce back candidate in 2020 and should be expected to perform once again as a top player in the league.
3. Anthony Rendon – Los Angeles Angels
2019 Season Statistics: 146 games .319/.412/.598 34 HR 126 RBI
Anthony Redon turned a monster 2019 season into a massive pay day in California. Coming off the World Series victory in October, Rendon signed a 7 year $245 million contract to play with Mike Trout and the Angels. The 29 year-old was an RBI machine last year and should continue to produce in a stacked Angels lineup and his stability at third should improve the Angels from their disappointing 2019 season.
2. Alex Bregman– Houston Astros
2019 Season Statistics: 146 games .296/.423/.592 41 HR 112 RBI
Another Houston player that benefited from the trash can scandal, Bregman is going to have to prove people wrong and show that he has the talent and skills capable of being the best third baseman in the MLB. Bregman has the glove at third base, he has the power numbers but whether his outstanding .423 OBP takes a hit from his 2019 season will remain to be seen (due to the world on lockdown).
1. Nolan Arenado– Colorado Rockies
2019 Season Statistics: 155 games .313/.378/.582 41 HR 118 RBI
Almost undisputedly the best third baseman in the league, Arenado is one of the most exciting and dominant players in the MLB. His range at third base allows him to make highlight reel plays on a daily basis. Arenado is often an NL MVP candidate and has won a gold glove almost every year of his career. The Rockies are another team in limbo as they did not make a single free agent addition in the offseason and there are rumors that Arenado is not happy in Colorado, it will be interesting to see if Nolan gets dealt or not.
