In this series of articles, we take a look at the top three players this past week from NHL fantasy. These top three players are going to include forwards, defenseman and goaltenders, but not each every week, just whoever has the most points at the end of the week in whatever position.
3. Semyon Varlamov, New York Islanders, G
3-0-0, 0.33 GAA, .988 SV%, 2 SHO, 81 SVS
An absolute beast of a start to the fantasy year for the Russian netminder as he hasn’t lost once and has only let in one goal in three games. Varlamov is in a tandem with fellow Russian, Ilya Sorokin but now Varlamov will probably take most of the starts down the way because of his excellent play this past fantasy week.
2. Tyler Toffoli, Montreal Canadiens, LW/RW
6 GP, 5 G, 3 A, 8 PTS, + 6, 1 PPG, 2 PPA, 1 SHG, 1 SHP, 20 SOG
The debut week for Tyler Toffoli couldn’t have been any better by notching a hatrick in one of the three games against his old team — the Vancouver Canucks — and playing great 5v5 and on special teams. Toffoli owners are ecstatic for the great production but don’t expect this every week going forward in the season.
1. John Tavares, Toronto Maple Leafs, C
7 GP, 4 G, 3 A, 7 PTS, + 1, 4 PPG, 1 PPA, 1 GWG, 24 SOG
John Tavares has put himself on the score sheet immediately this season, especially on the power-play. Depending on the points system for some leagues, Tavares was in the range of 1 to 3 for most fantasy points in the week one. Tavares is going to be a big part of the Maple Leafs success on the scoring front and will be one to hang onto for the rest of the season in your league.
